QEMU 53C9X Fast SCSI Controller Support hw/scsi/esp.c esp_reg_write memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function esp_reg_write of the file hw/scsi/esp.c of the component 53C9X Fast SCSI Controller Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The esp_reg_write function in hw/scsi/esp.c in the 53C9X Fast SCSI Controller (FSC) support in QEMU does not properly check command buffer length, which allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and QEMU process crash) or potentially execute arbitrary code on the QEMU host via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 05/20/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4439 since 05/02/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91660 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:1560-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176848 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DLA 1599-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91660). The entries 81088, 81154, 81155 and 81198 are related to this item.
