The vmsvga_fifo_run function in hw/display/vmware_vga.c in QEMU allows local OS guest administrators to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and QEMU process crash) via a VGA command.

The weakness was disclosed 06/01/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.gnu.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4453 since 05/02/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94758 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:2781-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176848 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DLA 1599-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
