A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function iscsi_aio_ioctl
of the file block/iscsi.c of the component IOCTL Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the iscsi_aio_ioctl function in block/iscsi.c in QEMU allows local OS guest users to cause a denial of service (QEMU process crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted iSCSI asynchronous I/O ioctl call.
The weakness was disclosed 06/01/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5126 since 05/30/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92935 (Oracle Linux 7 : qemu-kvm (ELSA-2016-1606)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196546 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu, Qemu-kvm Vulnerabilities (USN-3047-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
