F5 BIG-IP up to 10.2.0/11.5.3 SSL Handshake input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in F5 BIG-IP up to 10.2.0/11.5.3 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component SSL Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Virtual servers in F5 BIG-IP 11.5.4, when SSL profiles are enabled, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource consumption and Traffic Management Microkernel restart) via an SSL alert during the handshake.

The weakness was shared 12/16/2015 as 518275 / SOL48042976 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at support.f5.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4545 since 05/05/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

When a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) alert is sent during the handshake on a BIG-IP 11.5.4 base, the TMM may restart and produce a core file while logging SSL 'codec alert' messages to the /var/log/ltm file. The messages appear similar to the following example: warning tmm[32354]: 01260009:4: Connection error: hud_ssl_handler:1131: codec alert (20)

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91435 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : BIG-IP SSL vulnerability (K48042976)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370534 (F5 BIG-IP ASM TMM SSL Denial of Service Vulnerability (K48042976)).

Upgrading to version 10.2.1, 11.0.0, 11.5.4 HF1, 11.6.0 or 12.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91435).
