The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5766 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0959 since 01/10/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66498 (Apple iTunes < 11.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121191 (Apple iTunes Prior to 11.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2013-05-16-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81563), Tenable (66498), SecurityFocus (BID 57590†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38901†). The entries VDB-5599, VDB-5895, VDB-6682 and VDB-6684 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
