Microsoft Windows Server 2012/Server 2012 R2 Virtual PCI Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2012/Server 2012 R2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Virtual PCI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality.

The weakness was shared 06/14/2016 as MS16-073 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3232 since 03/15/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

An information disclosure vulnerability exists when the Windows Virtual PCI (VPCI) virtual service provider (VSP) fails to properly handle uninitialized memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could potentially disclose contents of memory to which they should not have access.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91601 (MS16-073: Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers (3164028)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91236 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS16-073)). The advisory illustrates:

To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would first have to log on to the target system. An attacker could then run a specially crafted application that could exploit the vulnerability. The vulnerability would not allow an attacker to execute code or to elevate user rights directly, but it could be used to obtain information that could be used to try to further compromise the affected system. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting VPCI memory handling.

Applying the patch MS16-073 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91601). The entries 87942 and 87943 are related to this item.
