Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco IOS up to 15.4(1.13)S (Router Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component LLDP Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Cisco IOS 15.0(2)SG5, 15.1(2)SG3, 15.2(1)E, 15.3(3)S, and 15.4(1.13)S allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device crash) via a crafted LLDP packet, aka Bug ID CSCun66735.
The weakness was published 06/17/2016 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20160616-ios1 / CSCun66735 / CSCun63132 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1425 since 01/04/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
A vulnerability in the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) packet processing code of Cisco IOS could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause the crash of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to improper handling of crafted LLDP packets. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted LLDP packet. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition on an affected platform.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316010 (Cisco IOS Software Link Layer Discovery Protocol Denial of Service Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20160616-ios1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
No workarounds are available for this vulnerability but administrators may choose to disable LLDP packet processing.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 91545†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036129†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
