A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.3 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component MVHD Atom Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1022 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67130 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2013-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121203 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2013-05-22-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12958.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84467) and Tenable (67130). The entries 8855, 8856, 8858 and 8859 are pretty similar.
