Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in phpMyAdmin 4.0.x before 4.0.10.16, 4.4.x before 4.4.15.7, and 4.6.x before 4.6.3 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving (1) a crafted table name that is mishandled during privilege checking in table_row.phtml, (2) a crafted mysqld log_bin directive that is mishandled in log_selector.phtml, (3) the Transformation implementation, (4) AJAX error handling in js/ajax.js, (5) the Designer implementation, (6) the charts implementation in js/tbl_chart.js, or (7) the zoom-search implementation in rows_zoom.phtml.
The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein with Cure53 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at phpmyadmin.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-5733 since 06/21/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91888 (openSUSE Security Update : phpMyAdmin (openSUSE-2016-804)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175793 (Debian Security Update for phpmyadmin (DSA 3627-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.10.16, 4.4.15.7 or 4.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
