X.Org libXv up to 1.0.7 Graphical Library XvQueryPortAttributes memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in X.Org libXv up to 1.0.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function XvQueryPortAttributes of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in X.org libXv 1.0.7 and earlier allows X servers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted length or index values to the XvQueryPortAttributes function.

The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at x.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2066 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66558 (Debian DSA-2674-1 : libxv - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).

Upgrading to version 1.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84509) and Tenable (66558). The entries 8875, 8876, 8877 and 8878 are pretty similar.
