Multiple integer overflows in X.org libXvMC 1.0.7 and earlier allow X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the (1) XvMCListSurfaceTypes and (2) XvMCListSubpictureTypes functions.
The weakness was published 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at x.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1990 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75044 (openSUSE Security Update : libXvMC (openSUSE-SU-2013:1025-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).
Upgrading to version 1.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
