The weakness was shared 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1983 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75029 (openSUSE Security Update : libXfixes (openSUSE-SU-2013:1014-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122738 (Red Hat Update for X11 client libraries (RHSA-2014:1436)).

Upgrading to version 5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org.
