A vulnerability was found in HTC One and Sense 4.x. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Mail Client. The manipulation as part of a SSL Connection leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-295. The product does not validate, or incorrectly validates, a certificate. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was published 05/28/2013 by Max Moser and Martin Schobert with modzero AG as HTC's E-Mail Client Fails to verify Server Certificates as not defined blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at modzero.ch. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-10001. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1587.003. The advisory points out:
If the user chooses encrypted and authenticated communication to a mail server, the application does not verify the server's certificate and automatically accepts any certificate without asking or warning the user. Thus, an attacker is able to intercept a user's credential and e-mails, especially in rogue access point scenarios.
A public exploit has been developed by Max Moser/Martin Schobert and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at modzero.ch. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The advisory illustrates:
Using SSL is completely pointless, if you don't verify the certificates at all.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
