Microsoft Windows memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Network Dynamic Data Exchange (NetDDE) services for Microsoft Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 allows attackers to remotely execute arbitrary code or locally gain privileges via a malicious message or application that involves an "unchecked buffer," possibly a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 10/12/2004. The weakness was released 10/12/2004 by John Heasman with NGSSoftware as MS04-031 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0206 since 03/11/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by houseofdabus and been published 3 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at beyonce.beyondsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15456 (MS04-031: Vulnerability in NetDDE Could Allow Code Execution (841533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying the patch MS04-031 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11946. In this case the pattern |10| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3057.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16556), Tenable (15456) and Exploit-DB (734). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 889, 890 and 888.
