IBM WebSphere Portal up to 8.0 HTTP code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM WebSphere Portal up to 8.0 (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component HTTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

CRLF injection vulnerability in IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0.x before 6.1.0.3 CF26, 6.1.5.x before 6.1.5 CF26, 7.0.0.x before 7.0.0.2 CF21, and 8.0.0.x through 8.0.0.1 CF5, when home substitution (aka uri.home.substitution) is enabled, allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 05/28/2013 as 83618 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The public release has been coordinated with IBM. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2950 since 04/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73386 (IBM WebSphere Portal Unspecified HTTP Response Splitting (PM85071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83618) and Tenable (73386).
