The _gnutls_ciphertext2compressed function in lib/gnutls_cipher.c in GnuTLS 2.12.23 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read and crash) via a crafted padding length. NOTE: this might be due to an incorrect fix for CVE-2013-0169.

The weakness was presented 05/22/2013 by Andreas Metzler as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at gnutls.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2116 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66954 (SuSE 11.2 / 11.3 Security Update : GnuTLS (SAT Patch Numbers 7781 / 7918)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216061 (VMware ESX 4.0.0 Patch Release ESX400-201310001 Missing (KB2059495)).

Applying the patch 5164d5a1d57cd0372a5dd074382ca960ca18b27d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitorious.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13230.
