IBM DB2 9.1/9.5/9.7/9.8/10.1 Audit Facility memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in IBM DB2 9.1/9.5/9.7/9.8/10.1 (Database Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Audit Facility. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in db2aud in the Audit Facility in IBM DB2 and DB2 Connect 9.1, 9.5, 9.7, 9.8, and 10.1, as used in Smart Analytics System 7600 and other products, allows local users to gain privileges via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was released 05/31/2013 by Bartlomiej Balcerek with Secunia as swg21639355 as confirmed bulletin (IBM Knowledge Base). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The public release was coordinated with IBM. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3475 since 05/07/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70455 (IBM DB2 10.1 < Fix Pack 3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19867 (IBM DB2 Audit Facility Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (swg21639355)).

Upgrading to version 10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch IC92498 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84358) and Tenable (70455).
