The bug was discovered 01/03/2001. The weakness was shared 05/25/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:notes.ini it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12248 (IBM Lotus Domino Server Crafted .nsf Request Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86225 (Lotus Domino Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1072.
