Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 OpenSSL information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component OpenSSL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 07/18/2016 by Juraj Somorovsky with Oracle as HT206903 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2107 since 01/29/2016. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Multiple issues existed in OpenSSL. These issues were resolved by backporting the fixes from OpenSSL 1.0.2h/1.0.1 to OpenSSL 0.9.8.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92585 (Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Multiple Vulnerabilities (July 2016 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196457 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Openssl Vulnerabilities (USN-2959-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92585) and Exploit-DB (39768). See 76354, 78584, 78603 and 78601 for similar entries.
