A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows XP on 64-bit (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. The SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) component of Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 64-bit Edition, and the Exchange Routing Engine component of Exchange Server 2003, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious DNS response message containing length values that are not properly validated.
The bug was discovered 10/12/2004. The weakness was presented 10/12/2004 with Microsoft as MS04-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0840 since 09/08/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
