The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15460 (MS04-037: Vulnerability in Windows Shell (841356)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90189 (Windows Shell Remote Code Execution (MS04-037)).
Applying the patch MS04-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3039.
