ISC BIND 9.6-esv-r9/9.8.5/9.9.3 Recursive Resolver resolver.c Zone Query denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This affects some unknown functionality of the file resolver.c of the component Recursive Resolver. The manipulation as part of a Zone Query leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

resolver.c in ISC BIND 9.8.5 before 9.8.5-P1, 9.9.3 before 9.9.3-P1, and 9.6-ESV-R9 before 9.6-ESV-R9-P1, when a recursive resolver is configured, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and named daemon exit) via a query for a record in a malformed zone.

The weakness was disclosed 06/04/2013 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3919 since 06/04/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78601 (Mac OS X : OS X Server < 4.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15089 (ISC BIND 9.6-ESV-R9-P1 Not Installed).

Upgrading to version 9.9.3-P1, 9.8.5-P1 or 9.6-ESV-R9-P1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
