Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.7 DSTCPEndpoint.cpp AllocFromProxyStruct memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.7 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function DSTCPEndpoint::AllocFromProxyStruct of the file DSTCPEndpoint.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory Service in Apple Mac OS X through 10.6.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a crafted message.

The weakness was published 06/04/2013 by Nicolas Economou as HT5784 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0984 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69319 (Mac OS X Directory Service Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121226 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and Security Update 2013-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-06-04-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84780), Exploit-DB (25974), Tenable (69319), SecurityFocus (BID 60328†) and OSVDB (93923†).
