CoreMedia Playback in Apple Mac OS X before 10.8.4 does not properly initialize memory during the processing of text tracks, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted movie file.

The weakness was presented 06/04/2013 by Billy Suguitan and Richard Kuo (Alex) with Triemt Corporation as HT5784 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1024 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/14/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70588 (Apple iTunes < 11.1.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
