FreeBSD up to 10.3-RELEASE-p6 bsdiff integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD up to 10.3-RELEASE-p6 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component bsdiff. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer signedness error in bspatch.c in bspatch in bsdiff, as used in Apple OS X before 10.11.6 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) via a crafted patch file.

The weakness was shared 07/25/2016 by Stefan Esser with Zero Day Initiative as FreeBSD-SA-16:25.bspatch as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9862 since 06/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

The implementation of bspatch does not check for a negative value on numbers of bytes read from the diff and extra streams, allowing an attacker who can control the patch file to write at arbitrary locations in the heap.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92496 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370095 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.6 and Security Update 2016-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-07-18-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (92496). The entries 88079, 89684, 89686 and 89687 are related to this item.
