The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 48.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was shared 08/02/2016 by Christian Holler, Tyson Smith, Boris Zbarsky, Byron Campen and Julian Seward (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2016-62 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2835 since 03/01/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 03/16/2019). The advisory points out:
Mozilla developers and community members reported several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
