The weakness was shared 08/02/2016 by Firas Salem (musicDespiteEverything) as MFSA 2016-66 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5251 since 06/03/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Security researcher Firas Salem reported that decoding url-encoded values in data: urls for display leads to potential spoofing in the Location bar by using non-ASCII and emoji characters in a data: url's mediatype. This issue could result in the wrong URL being displayed as a location, which can mislead users to believe they are on a different site than the one loaded.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92785 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : firefox vulnerabilities (USN-3044-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196543 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-3044-1)).

Upgrading to version 48 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
