Google Android on Nexus Kernel Sound race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Google Android on Nexus (Smartphone Operating System) (version now known). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Kernel Sound. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the queue_delete function in sound/core/seq/seq_queue.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) by making an ioctl call at a certain time.

The weakness was presented 08/01/2016 as Android Security Bulletin - August 2016 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at source.android.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2544 since 02/23/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
