Format string vulnerability in the b43_request_firmware function in drivers/net/wireless/b43/main.c in the Broadcom B43 wireless driver in the Linux kernel through 3.9.4 allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging root access and including format string specifiers in an fwpostfix modprobe parameter, leading to improper construction of an error message.
The weakness was released 06/06/2013 by Kees Cook as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2852 since 04/11/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69126 (Ubuntu 12.10 : linux vulnerability (USN-1917-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
