A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.11 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/packet-wbxml.c of the component WBXML Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. epan/dissectors/packet-wbxml.c in the WBXML dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.12 mishandles offsets, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow and infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 08/07/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5359 since 06/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91820 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.12 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175781 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3615-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
