A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file fs/overlayfs/dir.c of the component OverlayFS Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
fs/overlayfs/dir.c in the OverlayFS filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel before 4.6 does not properly verify the upper dentry before proceeding with unlink and rename system-call processing, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a rename system call that specifies a self-hardlink.
The weakness was released 08/06/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6197 since 07/11/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93241 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : linux-raspi2 vulnerabilities (USN-3070-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196568 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3070-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (93241). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 90355, 90631, 90657 and 125630.
