A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.12/2.0.4 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. epan/dissectors/packet-wsp.c in the WSP dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.13 and 2.x before 2.0.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 08/06/2016 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-6506. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93342 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : wireshark (SUSE-SU-2016:2212-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175813 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3648-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.13 or 2.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
