Wireshark up to 1.10.0 DCP ETSI Dissector packet-dcp-etsi.c dissect_pft Fragment Length input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_pft of the file packet-dcp-etsi.c of the component DCP ETSI Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Fragment Length leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_pft function in epan/dissectors/packet-dcp-etsi.c in the DCP ETSI dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.16, 1.8.x before 1.8.8, and 1.10.0 does not validate a certain fragment length value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 05/25/2013 by Buildbot Builder as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4083 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69105 (Wireshark 1.10.x < 1.10.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350493 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2013-251).

Upgrading to version 1.6.16 or 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84829) and Tenable (69105). See 5444, 5992, 5993 and 6000 for similar entries.
