A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function http_payload_subdissector
of the file packet-http.c of the component HTTP Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The http_payload_subdissector function in epan/dissectors/packet-http.c in the HTTP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.16 and 1.8.x before 1.8.8 does not properly determine when to use a recursive approach, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was released 05/29/2013 as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4081 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at bugs.wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71268 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2013-251)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350493 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2013-251).
Upgrading to version 1.6.16 or 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
