Wireshark up to 1.8.7 Assa Abloy R3 Dissector packet-assa_r3.c dissect_r3_upstreamcommand_queryconfig Zero-Length Item memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.7 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_r3_upstreamcommand_queryconfig of the file packet-assa_r3.c of the component Assa Abloy R3 Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Zero-Length Item leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_r3_upstreamcommand_queryconfig function in epan/dissectors/packet-assa_r3.c in the Assa Abloy R3 dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.8 does not properly handle a zero-length item, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop, and CPU and memory consumption) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was shared 06/03/2013 as not defined changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4080 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at bugs.wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70280 (Fedora 20 : wireshark-1.10.2-7.fc20 (2013-17627)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166243 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:1265-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84826) and Tenable (70280). The entries 9072, 9073, 9074 and 9076 are related to this item.
