A vulnerability was found in Alienvault USM and OSSIM 5.2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file conf/reload.php. The manipulation of the argument back with the input value \%27;alert(/XSS/);// leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (DOM). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in AlienVault OSSIM before 5.3 and USM before 5.3 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the back parameter to ossim/conf/reload.php.

The bug was discovered 05/24/2016. The weakness was presented 08/23/2016 by Julien Ahrens with RCE Security as RCESEC-2016-005 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Alienvault. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6913 since 08/22/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed in URL/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:conf/reload.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The code used by the exploit is:
