A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenVPN up to 2.3.11 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component 64-bit Block Cipher. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability (SWEET32). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2016 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan and Gaetan Leurent as SWEET32 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sweet32.info. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6329 since 07/26/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/14/2022). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600. The advisory points out:
When used in CBC mode, these ciphers are known to be susceptible to collision attacks when they are used to encrypt around 2^32 blocks of data (the so-called birthday bound).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93265 (Fedora 23 : openvpn (2016-dc2cb4ad6b) (SWEET32)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370284 (HP SiteScope Remote Disclosure of Information Vulnerability (HPSBGN03694)). The advisory illustrates:
Second, we show how a similar attack on Blowfish can be used to recover HTTP BasicAuth credentials sent over OpenVPN connections. In our proof-of-concept demos, the attacker needs to capture about 785GB of data, which takes between 19-38 hours in our setting.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (93265). The entry 90939 is pretty similar.
