A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function rle_unpack

The rle_unpack function in vmdav.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg git 20130328 through 20130501 does not properly use the bytestream2 API, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and application crash) via crafted RLE data. NOTE: the vendor has listed this as an issue fixed in 1.2.1, but the issue is actually in new code that was not shipped with the 1.2.1 release or any earlier release.
The issue has been introduced in 03/07/2013. The weakness was shared 05/01/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ffmpeg.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3670 since 05/24/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
