Oracle MySQL up to 5.5.52/5.6.33/5.7.15 Logging my.cnf access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Oracle MySQL up to 5.5.52/5.6.33/5.7.15 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file my.cnf of the component Logging. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 09/12/2016. The weakness was published 09/12/2016 by Dawid Golunski as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at legalhackers.com. The public release happened without involvement of Oracle. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-6662 since 08/10/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/16/2022). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Dawid Golunski in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at legalhackers.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 45 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96812 (CentOS 6 : mysql (CESA-2017:0184)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169171 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for mysql (SUSE-SU-2016:2343-1)).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be Workaround. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The vulnerabilities were patched by PerconaDB and MariaDB vendors by the end of 30th of August. During the course of the patching by these vendors the patches went into public repositories and the fixed security issues were also mentioned in the new releases which could be noticed by malicious attackers. As over 40 days have passed since reporting the issues and patches were already mentioned publicly, a decision was made to start disclosing vulnerabilities (with limited PoC) to inform users about the risks before the vendor's next CPU update that only happens at the end of October. No official patches or mitigations are available at this time from the vendor. As temporary mitigations, users should ensure that no mysql config files are owned by mysql user, and create root-owned dummy my.cnf files that are not in use.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96812) and Exploit-DB (40360). seclists.org is providing further details. Similar entries are available at 4597, 4598, 20222 and 79101.
