A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function CTextExtractor::GetBlockText. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Microsoft Browser Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 09/13/2016 by SkyLined with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as MS16-104 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3247 since 03/15/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93465 (MS16-105: Cumulative Security Update for Microsoft Edge (3183043)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100295 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS16-104)).

Applying the patch MS16-104 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
