A vulnerability has been found in ShoreTel Connect ONSITE up to 21.79.4311.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file /authenticate.php. The manipulation of the argument username
with the input value test'%20and%20(select*from(select(sleep(35)))a)--%20
leads to a sql injection vulnerability (Blind). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 09/19/2016 by Iraklis A. Mathiopoulos as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Iraklis A. Mathiopoulos and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:authenticate.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The advisory illustrates:
Specifically, the POST parameter "username" is not sanitised prior to being used in SQL Queries. Using test'%20and%20(select*from(select(sleep(35)))a)--%20 for the username value the server will respond after approximately 35 seconds.
Upgrading to version 21.79.9308.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.shoretel.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
