A vulnerability was found in libarchive up to 3.2.0 (File Compression Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function parse_device of the file archive_read_support_format_mtree.c of the component mtree File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Stack-based buffer overflow in the parse_device function in archive_read_support_format_mtree.c in libarchive before 3.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted mtree file.

The weakness was released 09/21/2016 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at blog.talosintel.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4301 since 04/27/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
