Wireshark up to 1.8.7 PPP Dissector packet-ppp.c dissect_iphc_crtp_fh memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.7 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is the function dissect_iphc_crtp_fh of the file packet-ppp.c of the component PPP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the dissect_iphc_crtp_fh function in epan/dissectors/packet-ppp.c in the PPP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2013-34 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4076 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66910 (Debian DSA-2709-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166238 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:1276-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84822) and Tenable (66910). The entries 9072, 9073, 9074 and 9076 are pretty similar.
