Jcraft jsch 0.1.53 on Windows sftp Client path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Jcraft jsch 0.1.53 on Windows. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component sftp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability (Client). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in JCraft JSch before 0.1.54 on Windows, when the mode is ChannelSftp.OVERWRITE, allows remote SFTP servers to write to arbitrary files via a ..\ (dot dot backslash) in a response to a recursive GET command.

The weakness was published 09/21/2016 by tintinweb as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5725 since 06/18/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

A malicious sftp server may force a client-side relative path traversal in jsch's implementation for recursive sftp-get allowing the server to write files outside the clients download basedir with effective permissions of the jsch sftp client process.

A public exploit has been developed by Sebastian Deiss in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93323 (Debian DLA-611-1 : jsch security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (93323) and Exploit-DB (40411).
