libdbd-mysql-perl 4.028 Error Message memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in libdbd-mysql-perl 4.028 (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was disclosed 10/03/2016 by Paul Rohar as DSA-3684-1 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1246 since 12/27/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

Paul Rohar discovered that libdbd-mysql-perl, the Perl DBI database driver for MySQL and MariaDB, constructed an error message in a fixed-length buffer, leading to a crash (_FORTIFY_SOURCE failure) and, potentially, to denial of service.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94027 (Fedora 24 : perl-DBD-MySQL (2016-870236238e)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196601 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libdbd-mysql-perl Vulnerabilities (USN-3103-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.028-2+deb8u2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (94027). The entry 90876 is pretty similar.
