A vulnerability was found in libdbd-mysql-perl 4.028 (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Error Message Handler. The weakness was disclosed 10/03/2016 by Paul Rohar as DSA-3684-1 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1246 since 12/27/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Paul Rohar discovered that libdbd-mysql-perl, the Perl DBI database driver for MySQL and MariaDB, constructed an error message in a fixed-length buffer, leading to a crash (_FORTIFY_SOURCE failure) and, potentially, to denial of service.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94027 (Fedora 24 : perl-DBD-MySQL (2016-870236238e)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196601 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libdbd-mysql-perl Vulnerabilities (USN-3103-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.028-2+deb8u2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (94027). The entry 90876 is pretty similar.
