A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function imx_fec_do_tx
of the file hw/net/imx_fec.c of the component Buffer Descriptor Count. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The imx_fec_do_tx function in hw/net/imx_fec.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) does not properly limit the buffer descriptor count when transmitting packets, which allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and QEMU process crash) via vectors involving a buffer descriptor with a length of 0 and crafted values in bd.flags.
The weakness was presented 10/05/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7907 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
