QEMU Buffer Descriptor Count hw/net/imx_fec.c imx_fec_do_tx input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function imx_fec_do_tx of the file hw/net/imx_fec.c of the component Buffer Descriptor Count. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The imx_fec_do_tx function in hw/net/imx_fec.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) does not properly limit the buffer descriptor count when transmitting packets, which allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and QEMU process crash) via vectors involving a buffer descriptor with a length of 0 and crafted values in bd.flags.

The weakness was presented 10/05/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7907 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95283 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:2879-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169386 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:2879-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
