The pcnet_rdra_addr function in hw/net/pcnet.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and QEMU process crash) by setting the (1) receive or (2) transmit descriptor ring length to 0.
The weakness was published 10/05/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7909 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900047 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169412 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:2988-1)).
