A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.1.24/5.2.1.80/5.2.2.118 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the file new_whitelist.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) before 5.2.5 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary OS commands.
The weakness was released 10/06/2016 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5313. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 88 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:new_whitelist.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94052 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.2.5 Management Console Command Injection (SYM16-017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 5.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
