The weakness was disclosed 10/06/2016 by AbdulAziz Hariri with Zero Day Initiative as APSB16-33 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helpx.adobe.com. The vendor advisory states that the initial disclosure was October 6, 2016. But it appears that the advisory got released on October 11, 2016 to the public. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-6979 since 08/23/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94074 (Adobe Reader < 11.0.18 / 15.006.30243 / 15.020.20039 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33) (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370154 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33)).

Upgrading to version 11.0.18, 15.006.30243 or 15.020.20039 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94074), SecurityFocus (BID 93491†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036986†). The entries VDB-92615, VDB-92616, VDB-92617 and VDB-92618 are pretty similar.
