A vulnerability was found in Evernote 6.1.2.2292 on Windows. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file dwmapi.dll/ntmarta.dll of the component Library Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2016 by Himanshu Mehta as WINNOTE-15637 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Evernote contains a DLL hijacking vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system. The vulnerability exists due to some DLL file is loaded by 'Evernote_6.1.2.2292.exe' improperly. And it allows an attacker to load this DLL file of the attacker?s choosing that could execute arbitrary code without the user's knowledge.

A public exploit has been developed by Himanshu Mehta and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The advisory illustrates:

1. Create a malicious 'dwmapi.dll' or 'ntmarta.dll' file and save it in your "Downloads" directory. 2. Download 'Evernote_6.1.2.2292.exe' from and save it in your "Downloads" directory. 3. Execute .exe from your "Downloads" directory. 4. Malicious dll file gets executed.

Upgrading to version 6.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
